I guess this topic gives always the biggest hits by search engine key words. Many people write about what we should write in our application. If there is something I can share from my experience - I always focused on "now". Try to describe the issues I have. The issues likely be solved by attending the program.
For example, I am trying to go to a business school here, so don't want to spend too much on where I came from (beautiful childhood memories) or my big dreams in the future (i.e. fly to the moon).
I guess simple reasons for this,
A past is a past, doesn't matter since I want to change myself now. (If I already achieved in the past why I'm doing for?)
AND
A future is a future, each dream is good. Dream to be a manager is less worthy to be a CEO? Or Richest man in the world?
So I decided instead to focus more on the current situation. The issues I'm facing and challenges. Macro trends needed to be understood. Optimization needs to be done, competitive edge, innovations, leadership, etc.
So this should be pretty easy (and powerful) since we already have so many issues to solve now. Just pick some of them, by not only I will benefit it but also the other may encounter the same/close problem, so we can work it together, contribute to the classmates.
Also, I try to describe how I'm special (or you may say strange). So I can contribute a different way, they want us to be different.
For example like this,

management should learn management (not a step to be management level)
capitalism vs mid size family own company
- Answers
macro trends, up-to-date info, corporate culture, leadership, sustainability, innovation, cross culture
- My advantage
MBA, experienced live in US -> English proficiency

Personality as Japanese - study for history & culture -> Typical business school study topic - how we manage the differences
If you don't know where to start, look at what you will study in the program and drew some topics you are interested in. Describe the issues you have and add your specialty to it. And it's done!
Why parts been covered by issues, Program fit can be showed by answers, Appeals can be done by advantages.
Probably there are so many ways to approach, But at least these worked for me for MBA and AMP essays. Hope this helps.

将来の夢や、どこで生まれ、どこで育ったのかには、動機を説明するには良いのですが、あまり多くを費やしたくない、というか、個々の思想は恐らく理解されないのでは？と思うわけです。
過去は過去であって、私は今の自分を今変えたいわけですから。
そして
未来は未来であって、夢の良し悪しはないので。
ということで、現在に焦点を当てると。
現在の状況、直面している課題に焦点を当てる。
そして、書き始めるといつも気づくところなのですが、これはとても簡単な作業に思えるのです。そして、なによりも力強く書けるのです。
私たちは日々多くの問題を解決する必要があるわけですから。そのものを素直に書けば良いのですね。それらのうちのいくつかを選択して、他の人も同じもしくは近い問題に遭遇する可能性があって、それらを一緒に解決しようとすることができるようなものを選んでみる。
また同時に、私達が特別な存在であることを説明する必要があります。（特別というより変わっているというのが正しいかも）だからこそ、我々は違う方法で貢献することができるし、他の参加者は私たちが異なっていることを望んでいます。
それでは、実際に考えてみましょう。たとえばこのような形になります。

どこから始めたらいいかわからない場合、何を勉強するのかをまず理解して、興味のある単語を拾って、自分がどのように特別なのかを足す。これで完成！
”Why”は”問題”よってカバーされ、
"Program Fit"は”答え”によって示され、
”Appeal”は”利点”によって語られる。
この論法がベストではないかもしれませんが、
少なくとも、私のMBAとAMPの受験では2/2の結果を残しました。
AMPのApplicationは片手間で書いたものが結果的に最終版となりました。
ひねって逆に読みにくくなっては本末転倒なので、どシンプルのまま出すことになりました。
